🧺 Home Reset: Your counter isn’t the problem

Hi there!

Let me tell you about Maya. Every Sunday night she wipes her kitchen counter clean. By Monday breakfast, it’s a landing strip again… mail, a water bottle, three permission slips. After years of this, she’s decided she’s just “a messy person.” Relatable?

Well, Maya isn’t a messy person. Her counter is doing exactly what any unmanaged surface does. That’s the first thing I want you to hear from us: clutter is not a character flaw, it’s not who you are as a person. It’s actually cognitive load! A pile-up of small, well-meaning decisions. Which means it’s not something to feel ashamed of or feel bad about. It’s something we can reset.

So before we touch a single drawer over the coming weeks, let’s get clear on what we’re even after. Calm isn’t a spotless, magazine-perfect home. Calm is a home that doesn’t drain you. That’s the target! It’s a feeling, not a photo, and naming it makes every decision after this one easier.

Your 15-minute reset this week

Choose one visible surface: a kitchen counter, an entry table, your desk. Clear away what doesn’t belong there, and give the surface a one-sentence purpose (“this is where we drop keys and nothing else”). That’s it. Don’t organize it. Notice how a single clear surface changes the whole room.

A few questions to sit with

  • What would “calm” actually feel like in this one space?
  • What is this surface really for?

Hit reply and tell me the one space that steals your calm. Hopefully it's just one!

Warmly,

Tammy

P.S. Clutter competes for your attention on a neurological level. Princeton researchers McMains & Kastner (2011) found visual clutter literally makes it harder to focus. Clearing one surface isn’t trivial, it’s literally giving your brain room to breathe!
