🌿 The new initiative landed on your desk

Hello Reader!

Imagine…In the first week of November, your school announces a new instructional initiative, rolling out districtwide in January, with an optional training session that Friday. Six months ago, you would have signed up without a second thought, another tab for the binder, another thing to try.

This time… you pause.

The pause itself feels uncomfortable. Almost like you are being asked to choose between being a growing educator and being a focused one. As though the two could not coexist. That tension is worth naming honestly, because most educators feel it constantly: the pull of every new initiative competing against the deeper, slower work already underway.

Psychologist Angela Duckworth's research on sustained effort over time offers a useful distinction here: sustained focus is not the same as rigidity, and choosing not to chase every new thing is not the same as refusing to grow. It is choosing where your growth actually goes.

What if you skipped the Friday training? You’re not against the new initiative. You simply decided that finishing what you started in September matters more right now than adding a thirteenth tab.

From here, this week's invitation is to notice the next new thing that lands on your desk, and to ask honestly whether it deserves your focus more than what you are already building.

A few questions to sit with:

  • What new initiative or idea is currently competing for your attention?
  • Does it deserve to replace your current focus, or can it wait its turn?

Strategically less is still a strategy. your discernment is intention, doing its quiet work.

We would love to hear about a time you chose to stay the course instead of chasing something new.

Warmly,

Tammy
