🌿 Monday Thoughts: Return With Clarity

Hello Reader!

One clear focus will do more for your year than ten good intentions.

By the second week of August, most of us have a list.

Sometimes it lives in a notebook. Sometimes in a notes app. Sometimes just in our head! It’s a running inventory of everything we want to do differently this year, everything they want to add, everything they want to fix.

The list is evidence of something good: a growth orientation, the willingness to reflect, the belief that next year can be better than last year.

It is also, almost always, way too long… (guilty).

Why the Long List Doesn't Work

There's a particular kind of optimism that lives in August. It’s the same one that fills gyms in January and quiets by February. Everything feels possible when you're rested and the slate feels clean.

But as time rolls along, it gets, our spaces get loud, relational, unpredictable, and demanding in ways that no amount of August planning fully accounts for. Those of us who return with oodles of things to change usually abandon most of them by Halloween. Not for lack of trying, but because of lack of focus.

One clear priority, held consistently, will do more for your year than oodles of intentions that compete for your attention.

Finding Your One Thing

This isn't about settling. It's about honoring the reality of what sustained attention actually requires.

Ask yourself:

  • If I could only improve one thing about my teaching or leadership this year, what would have the most impact on students?
  • What shift, even a small one, would make the daily experience of this work feel more aligned with why I do it?
  • What did I learn last year that deserves to be the foundation of this year, not a footnote?

The answer to those questions is your one thing. Name it. Write it somewhere visible. Return to it when August's optimism meets October's reality. You can use our Priority Filter if it helps!

Clarity Is Protective

Clarity about your one focus isn't only a productivity strategy, it’s for protection.

When you know what matters most, you have a filter for everything else. New initiatives, extra commitments, and competing demands get evaluated against something real: Does this serve my one focus, or does it crowd it out?

That filter doesn't make you inflexible. It makes you intentional. And intentional educators consistently outperform busy ones.

Reflection

What is the one thing you most want this school year to be about, for your students and for you?

Let us know! We love hearing from you!

Yours,
