🌿 Monday Thoughts: Return to Your People

Hello Reader!

Though many of you have already welcomed students back, the relationships you build before they arrive(d) will carry you through the year.

In the rush of August preparation days, something important often gets crowded out.

Not the curriculum, the classroom setup, or even the logistics of schedules and rosters and procedures.

It’s the people.

The colleagues who are also returning to a new year, also carrying the weight of last year, also quietly wondering whether this year will be different. The team members you'll need to trust in February when things get hard. The administrator or mentor who might make the difference between a year you survive and a year you're glad you showed up for.

Your most important work now is relational.

Why Pre-Year Relationships Matter More Than We Admit

Most professional development in August is structured around content: curriculum, assessment, systems, and initiatives. These things matter, but they're not what will carry you through a difficult November.

What carries you through a difficult November is knowing that someone across the hall, or down the corridor sees you, knows your situation, and is genuinely on your side.

Research on educator retention and well-being is consistent here: the quality of adult relationships in a school is one of the strongest predictors of teacher satisfaction and longevity. It’s not the resources or the curriculum. It’s the people.

Now is when those relationships are most available to invest in.

What Relational Investment Looks Like Before the Year Starts

This doesn't require grand gestures. It requires intention:

  • Finding the colleague you most want to stay connected to this year and actually saying it out loud
  • Checking in, genuinely, not professionally, with someone who had a hard year last year
  • Naming something you appreciated about a teammate and saying it before the year demands take over
  • Having one honest conversation with your administrator about what you need this year to go well

These moments feel small. Over the course of a year, they're structural.

A Particular Note for Leaders

If you lead a team, the relational tone you set now will reverberate for months.

Your staff is watching how you start this year. They're calibrating whether they're seen, whether their experience last year was acknowledged, whether this year might be different.

A genuine, specific welcome back is worth more than any opening-day agenda. Don't let logistics crowd out that moment.

Reflection

Which colleague most deserves a deliberate moment of connection from you before students arrive? What would you want them to know?

Let us know! We love hearing from you!

Yours,
