🥳 Email Update: Setting Realistic Goals (When You’re Already Tired)

Hello Reader!

January goal-setting can feel inspiring… or completely exhausting.

For many educators, it sounds like:
“I should be doing more.”
“I need to fix everything.”
“Why don’t I have the energy I had in August?”

Here’s the truth: realistic goals don’t demand more energy, they protect it.

This year, I’m encouraging educators to move away from performance-based goals and toward sustainability-based goals.

Instead of asking:
“What new thing should I start?”
Try asking:
“What deserves better support?”

Sustainable goals often sound quieter:

  • Protecting planning time instead of adding initiatives
  • Strengthening one feedback routine instead of redesigning assessments
  • Saying no to one commitment to say yes to focus

These goals don’t show up on checklists, but they change everything.

Educators don’t burn out because they don’t care. They burn out because they care deeply without enough boundaries. Realistic goals honor both purpose and capacity.

A helpful January practice is choosing one focus:

  • One instructional move
  • One leadership habit
  • One system to simplify

Anything more competes for attention. Anything less builds momentum.

Progress doesn’t come from intensity. It comes from consistency and consistency only happens when goals are livable.
